“May?” Merinde asked.

“The region was fickle to begin with,” Gerard replied, “Now it’s more so.  Anything beyond that is speculation.”

“Why you and why alone?”

“Those are wonderful questions,” Anibel said, her matronly stare falling on Gerard.

Gerard scratched the side of his mouth, ignoring the inquisition directed at him for a few moments.  Emotions charged around inside of him, but his level headed Ranger training served him well.  “Simple logistics really,” he said, “I’m capable and I’m the closest.  To inform others and organize a scouting party would add a month to the discovery of knowledge which I can achieve in days.  The gains outweigh the risks.”

“But now you’re not alone,” Anibel said.

“Yes, there is that,” Gerard replied, his eyes turning to Merinde.

“You’re comfortable risking her life too?”

“I don’t really see a good alternative,” he said.

“And I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Merinde said with a smile.
